System Event Log (SEL) is a hardware-focused log that the system’s management controller (BMC) records to help diagnose problems at the hardware level. It captures events from sensors and hardware components such as temperatures, voltages, fan speeds, power supply status, disk and memory faults, POST errors, and chassis events. Because it tracks what the hardware itself reports, it’s a primary source for troubleshooting when the operating system isn’t reachable or when a hardware fault is suspected.

This makes it distinct from software crash logs, which live in the operating system or applications, and from BIOS/UEFI configuration data, which is stored separately rather than in the SEL.
